Macintosh-based computers prefer to use video in the QuickTime and MP4 file formats. This is why on our download options include QuickTime, Windows Media and MP4 file formats for you to choose from. Digital Movies that use the QuickTime architecture can be embedded in presentation programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Apple Keynote. During a presentation, the QuickTime movie added to an individual slide can be played directly from the slide or displayed using the QuickTime Player itself. Since November 2009, you may download higher quality versions of our movies in QuickTime H.264 (best for Macintosh programs) and Windows Media (best for Microsoft programs). If QuickTime is your preference, then the following sets of instructions will be helpful.
QUICKTIME FOR APPLE COMPUTERS. In general, embedding a QuickTime movie into either Microsoft PowerPoint or Apple Keynote on computers running the Mac Operating System is a simple matter of using an INSERT COMMAND. Movies are often not saved in the presentation file itself, but are referenced from the presentation, linking to a folder or directory of the movies. This helps prevent the presentation file from becoming overwhelmingly large and bloated.
Newer versions of PowerPoint and Keynote may use variations of the following instructions. FOR MICROSOFT POWERPOINT on Apple Computers. Create a slide Use whatever templates or styles you prefer Insert the movie.
Go to the INSERT menu. Select the option MOVIE AND SOUNDS. Select the option MOVIE FROM FILE. Navigate to the location of the QuickTime Movie, choose it.
Determine if you want the movie to play automatically or by using a mouse click. On the slide, resize the movie as needed. Save your PowerPoint file. Play the slide and its embedded movie. FOR APPLE KEYNOTE on Apple Computers. Preferences settings Keynote's Preference Settings determine whether an audio or movie file is copied into the presentation file (making it larger) or only referenced as a link to a folder of audio and movie files. Create a slide Use whatever templates or styles you prefer Insert the movie.
Go to the INSERT menu. Select the option CHOOSE. Navigate to the location of the QuickTime Movie and insert it. On the slide, resize the movie as needed. Save your Keynote file. Play the slide and its embedded movie.
QUICKTIME FOR WINDOWS-BASED COMPUTERS. In general, embedding a QuickTime movie into PowerPoint on computers running the Windows Operating System requires the use of an INSERT OBJECT command, rather than INSERT MOVIE. QuickTime movies are not considered a file format that can be directly embedded into a slide. Rather, a link is made to the '.mov' file and it is played in the QuickTime Player itself. You may prefer to use the Windows Media versions of our download videos in Windows PowerPoint since the INSERT MOVIE command works for files in the '.wmv' file format. QuickTime movies are not saved in the presentation file itself, but are referenced from the presentation, linking to a folder or directory of the movies. This helps prevent the presentation file from becoming overwhelmingly large and bloated.
Newer versions of PowerPoint may use variations of the following instructions. FOR MICROSOFT POWERPOINT on Windows-based Computers. Confirm you have QuickTime Since QuickTime does not come with a Windows-based operating system, it must be installed separately. If you have recently installed iTunes, QuickTime was automatically added to your computer.
Otherwise, you can download the free version of QuickTime at this web address. Warning on directory structures Be sure your PowerPoint file and the movies you are linking to are always in the same folder or directory.
Otherwise, Microsoft's Operating System will lose the threads between the PPT file and the movies, and may result in an error message, such as 'Can't find the movie.' Create a slide Use whatever templates or styles you prefer Insert an object. Go to the INSERT menu. Select the option OBJECT (you may have to click the little down arrow in the menu to see this menu option) From the Insert Object options window. Select the radio button labeled 'Create from file'.
Use the 'Browse' button to navigate to and select the specific movie you wish to add to your PowerPoint slide. Do NOT check mark the option to create 'Link'. Do NOT check mark the option to 'Display an icon'. Click the OK button to finish inserting the movie object into your slide. Arrange the elements of your slide. Confirm that your movie object has been inserted into your slide.
You will see the NAME of the movie appear in a small object box. If the movie name is truncated, use your mouse to grab an 'anchor point' on the right side of the object box and drag it to enlarge the horizontal real estate of that box.
Relocate the object box anywhere on your slide that works well with your text or images. Do NOT resize the object box to resemble the size of the movie you want to display. The object box is not the movie; it is only a link to play the QuickTime movie in the QuickTime Player itself. Create an Action Setting for your object Now that the movie object has been created, you must give it instructions on how to play its movie. Select the movie object by clicking it once.
Its anchor points will be made visible. From the menu for SLIDE SHOW, select ACTION SETTINGS (you may have to click the little down arrow in the menu to see this menu option).
Or after selecting the movie object, just RIGHT-MOUSE-CLICK the object and select ACTION SETTINGS from the contextual menu. The Action Settings options window appears. There are several options in the section of the window labeled 'Action on Click'.
Select the radio button labeled 'Object action' and from the picklist of actions, select 'Activate Contents'. In the lower section of the window, check mark 'Highlight Click' in order to give you visual confirmation that you have clicked the movie object when giving your PowerPoint presentation. Save your PowerPoint presentation To display your movie. Begin your PowerPower presentation as 'Slide Show'. When you reach a slide with a movie object, click that object once. QuickTime Movies with lots of tracks Some QuickTime movies are created with many tracks of data, such as the video track, the audio track in English, the audio track in Spanish, text captions in English, text captions in Spanish, and even interactive buttons and sprites that turn tracks off and on. On Windows-based computers, these multiple track QuickTime movies sometimes don't display intact the first time. The quick fix is to immediately click the QuickTime Player's 'Go to end of movie' button. Then click the 'Go to start of movie' button. All tracks are now engaged and are displayed.
