As promised, Nvidia last night beta macOS drivers for its latest GeForce 10-series graphics cards, enabling macOS support for cards ranging from the GeForce GTX 1050 to the newly announced Nvidia Titan Xp. MacOS drivers for Nvidia's Pascal 10-series graphics cards will be of interest to those who build Hackintosh machines, use external GPUs, and those who own older Mac Pro machines that can be updated with newer GPUs. Apple has not used Nvidia GPUs in its Macs for several years now, favoring AMD instead. Nvidia first said it for its latest line of graphics cards when it announced the launch of the Nvidia Titan Xp, which Nvidia says is the world's most powerful graphics card with 12GB of GDDR5X memory running at 11.4 Gb/s, 3,840 CUDA cores running at 1.6GHz, and 12 TFLOPS of processing power. Prior to the release of the drivers, Mac users were only able to use previous-generation Maxwell-based 9-series GPUs.
The new macOS Pascal drivers can be from Nvidia. Now anybody with a $800 budget can build a hackintosh that runs circles around a $6000 mac pro in graphic intensive applications. Your comment made me curious, so I did some quick pricing, and minus extras like finishing off the cooling system and stuff like monitors and whatnot, probably the cheapest you could go and still 'run circles' around the $6000 Mac Pro is probably at least $1500.
I mean, obviously waaaaay cheaper, and I assume you were just being hyperbolic with the $800 budget. But I spent the time looking, so I thought I'd share. That said, I loved the tone of last week's press meet with Phil and Craig. 'We know the Mac Pro is a mess, we're sorry, we're going to fix it, please don't leave us.' :D doublepost=/doublepost Is this compatible with my 5k iMac, both on the Mac and Windows/boot camp? I could not find anything online to confirm. I know there are hoops to jump through getting eGPUs working with macOS, especially if you're going to be running TB2 with an iMac.
But if you're interested this place ('looks like a pretty good resource for getting started. Windows probably has better support, but I'm less familiar with eGPU efforts on that side of the coin. I can't wait to get home and update the driver on my Hackintosh.
And for those who say you can't compare a home-made computer with a Mac Pro are right if you are needing fault-tolerant hardware. But for $1500, you can definitely get a computer that will perform just as well as a $6000 machine. The main issue would be that the $1500 machine might have components break sooner, but if you don't have a mission critical process then it doesn't really matter. And since you are using commonly available parts, if it does fail, then it is fairly easy to replace the part. That being said, I love my cMP that is still going strong strong from 2010. My 2007 is a little long in the tooth, but is still in production.
Hi all, We just got a Quad 3 GHZ with an FX4500. We want to get active stereo (shutter glasses sync'ed to the computer via the 3 pin connector.). To make a long story short, we can get correct output on Windows in the Mac Pro but nothing like it in OSX. We are trying different software packages in both systems but at this point I am more inclined to think it is a driver bug. In the windows (and even Linux) you can install the Nvidia driver and play around with different settings. It is known that you don't get active stereo until you activate quadbuffer and set the refresh rate to at least 100Hz. Why can't you set those parameters in OSX?
Are they supposed to be active by default? Has anybody been able to get active stereo on a similar configuration? Every time I get a chance - I post about how bad the NVidia driver support is in OS X, and here it proves my conclusions once again. I suspect that you will not be able to get the stereo to work because the nv40 driver in OS X is pretty rudimentary comapred to a real NVidia written driver for Windows.
This is all because Apple writes the driver and not NVidia, so they most likely did not bother to implement any higher order functions or supported all the GL extensions that NVidia has. Not to mention that nv40 is now old generation compared to today's G7x chips. The nv47 (G70) which is in Quadro FX 4500 has more advanced features that are probably unused in the current OS X driver. And from what I hear from people who tried Leopard, the driver there did not change either, still nv40hal. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I've spent too much time looking at the NVidia side of things that I've grown weary of hope things would be different. Aside all this, I have something I'd like to ask you to do for me, since you have a Quadro FX 4500.

Considering that Apple highlights these capabilities on the Mac Pro website; Or choose the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 graphics card. One of the most advanced graphics cards available, the Quadro FX 4500 provides a 3D stereo graphics port for stereo-in-a-window applications, making it an excellent choice for high-end scientific visualization. Then we should expect it to work. I also have purchased a new Mac Pro with the FX4500, but haven't gotten it setup for testing yet.
What kind of shutter glasses and software have you tried (without success) so far? So thanks to the guys from Vmd I got this info, it turns out that the implementation in the driver is broken but there are ways around it: 'the reason you guys are having trouble getting stereo working in your own code on the Macs with the NVidia Quadro 4500 cards is because Apple's stereo implementation is broken, and you have to write special code to make it work correctly. Basically, their current drivers don't correctly process glDrawBuffer settings that go to both color buffers, such as GLFRONT and GLBACK. The GL FRONTRIGHT / GL BACKRIGHT eye-specific buffers work, but while running in a stereo window, they don't correctly process the GLFRONT and GLBACK buffer parameters, and this is what breaks many codes written on SGI or Sun machines which do handle these correctly.' Many Mac OS X (10.4.7).
I have gotten the macpro quad 2.66 + fx4500 graphics card to work with crystaleyes (RealD) shutter glasses. I am using the program macPymol. The refresh rate settings on your CRT monitor are critical and the default settings available (via apple display preferences) are not fine tunable. We used the program DisplayConfigX ( ) to generate custom horizontal and vertical refresh rate settings for our monitor. The refresh rate settings we used were as per suggestions at. Notice that relatively small differences in refresh rates will put you out of the sweet spot and thus no stereo. Check the two above web pages, they saved me much frustration!
Note: Once you run DisplayConfigX (and yes it does run fine on intel macs) you will be able to pick your new refresh rate settings from inside apples display preferences as per normal procedure. Note: I am currently using 1000s of colors. I do not know if this matters; I will try millions of colors soon. Finally, I found that that the monitor you are doing stereograpjics from needs to be your main monitor. Thus if you are running dual monitors (e.g., LCD + CRT), you need to select your CRT monitor to the main monitor (systemprefs/displays/arrangement/(drag the 'title bar' to the correct 'display')). I often have to reboot after switching main monitors like this in order to get the stereo to sync correctly. Perhaps some more fine tuning of the refresh rate will nullify this last step.
